I decided to paint the figures in the base set, but I didn't want to have to keep them all neatly racked to protect their paintwork and so I opted for a spray job of just one colour for each type.
I chose the colours that matched their banners (Red, Blue and Green). I decided to use car spray paint, which I bought from Halfords for around £5.99 a can.
First I removed all the banners from the bases. Then I laid them out on chipboard with the melamine surface by colour and sprayed them. After an hour or so I gently moved them to clean wood to help stop the bases getting stuck in the paint overspill.
Once they dried they were glossy, I could image during a game they would be off putting, so I gave them a lick of Matt varnish (humbrol). Because they were already moved to fresh wood this was easy to follow through with.
By applying the Matt finish it brought out the detail in the figures again. I made sure these had a good few days to dry at room temp. before I bagged them up. They all fit in the main box and look great on the battlefield, and most importantly the units are easily distinguishable from each other.
I will move on and spray the goblins and dwarf's, I'll hand paint the bases a colour to make them stand out from the human troops before applying the Matt varnish. Brown for the dwarfs and a lighter shade of green for the goblins.
Has anyone else tried or thought about painting the figures and if so how will you do it??
